This offset lithograph was printed in 1950 by the State Publishing Office of Austria, Vienna, and is from Otto Benesch’s “Egon Schiele as a Draughtsman”. Egon Schiele, Austrian, 1890-1918, died tragically at the age of 28 from the Spanish flu. His work is noted for its intensity and the many portraits the artist produced. The twisted body shapes and expressive lines are characteristic of his work. The image is signed in the plate. For those who don’t know who Arnold Schoenberg, 1874-1951 was, he was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Born in Vienna, he was controversial in the classical music world both loved and disliked equally. Being Jewish, he was advised to leave home as the Nazi’s were threatening. He emigrated to the US in 1933, became a citizen in 1941 and died in California in 1951. He was the grandfather of E. Randel Schoenberg, a lawyer, who was played by Ryan Reynolds in the film The Woman in Gold, in which he represented Maria Altmann, whose aunt was Adele Bloch-Bauer and whose spectacular portrait was painted by Gustav Klimt and stolen by the Nazi’s in 1938. After 7 years he won the case for her before the Supreme Court and the painting came home to its rightful family. It now resides in the Neue Galerie in New York having been purchased by Ronald S. Lauder and remains on view for all to see as per the wishes of the Bloch-Bauer family.
