This wonderful original Lithograph is from the French Art Magazine, Derrière Le Miroir (Behind the Mirror) published by Aime Maeght between 1946 and 1982. The Galerie Maeght, in Paris nice 1945, exhibited and promoted names such as Bonnard, Matisse, Leger, Steinberg, Chagall and Kandinsky and many others. The magazine itself was designed as an art object sumptuously presented in a large format, illustrated with original lithographs as well as a number of reproductions. The magazine was not bound so that you could display or frame the original lithographs. In the industry it is simply known as DLM. I purchased a large lot of DLM’s among other art magazines from the estate of Churchill P. Lathrop (1900-1996). He spent most of his career at Dartmouth College where he served as a professor of Art History, Art Librarian and Director of the Art Galleries. He was a forward thinking man and in 1932 he brought Mexican Muralist, Jose’ Clemente Orozco to Dartmouth to paint the amazing 24 panel, 3200 square feet mural “Epic of American Civilization” which he finished in 1934 and is the crowning jewel at Dartmouth. Marc Chagall, (1887-1985), French/Russian is once of the most well known artists. The lithograph is 15 x 22 inches and is in excellent condition. Please note that this large format lithograph was originally folded in DLM, but it does not effect the image.
