This is an original woodblock print from Harper’s Weekly dated April 28, 1860. The convention was held in Charleston from April 23 - May 3 and they failed to nominate a ticket. The Democrats reconvened for another convention in Baltimore on June 18. Many Southern states did not attend - there was much contention of the slavery issue, and the Democrats ended up nominating Senator Stephen Douglass of Illinois. The Southern Democrats met in their own separate convention and nominated then Vice President John Breckinridge for President. Douglas and Breckinridge both won a significant share of the popular vote in the election, but we all know Republican Abraham Lincoln won the final election. The 160 year old print is in good condition. It has some mild age toning and the center fold line has been reinforced on the reverse with archival rice paper tape. There are some pinholes along the center where the paper was originally bound.
