This is an original woodblock print from Harper’s Weekly dated April 30, 1864 by artist Thomas Nast. Nast is honoring the “press” who go out in the field and bring the stories back to be written and published for the public. Correspondents during the Civil War had harsh circumstances that they had to work under - just as war correspondents do today. There are several vignettes including: In Action, Reliable Information, The Newspapers in Camp, The Sketch Book, Newspapers at Home, Contraband News, Our Artist, taking notes, sketching, A Correspondent. The 156 year old print is in good condition. It has some pinholes in the centerfold where the paper was originally bound. A great gift for a current correspondent. Most of the time there was a writer and an artist. The writer would do the copy and the field artist would send sketches back from which artists would create images to go with the story. There was always a lag by the time the copy and art could be done and published and the actual occurrence.
